This book focuses on Linux and the popular distributions (distros) that are currently out there. This edition looks at the latest versions of selected distros as well as talks about LiveCDs, such as Knoppix, Damn Small Linux (DSL) and Puppy Linux. Some of the full distros that was looked at included Suse, Fedora Core, Mandriva, Debian and some others. This book is geared towards peaking the interest in a novice Linux user and discusses and outlines the features of each distribution for those who are maybe not sure of other alternatives or the simplicity of other distributions.
Book Contents
The book at the beginning talks about Linux, how it started off and then introduces the user to the command line interface (CLI) and some basic administration.
The next part of the book focuses on Linux distributions and going into moderate detail about the use and know-how of each distribution. Some distributions were covered more than some others.
After the distributions were covered, you are introduced to popular programs that are used on a daily basis like Internet browsers, email clients, music players, movie players and Office suites.
After that you can learn how to make your own server, whether it be a webserver, a mail server or even a simple file server for those who are comfortable in such environments. If you always had a knack for programming, the last section in the book covers programming and different compilers. You could learn C or C++ and much more.
The administration part of the book is quite good. It shows you where to go in case of things not going so well, saying trying to figure out why your hardware does not work or why a program does not install. Linux does everything with logs and if you know what to look
CLI is quite important, sometimes in the event that KDE or GNOME does not start, you can try to find a way to fix the problem and get your system back up and running.
This book also talks about alternatives to KDE and GNOME in Fluxbox and other GUI environments. It was not mentioned a whole lot since most of the distributions that were talked about either use KDE or GNOME.
* Bonus DVD is the only one on the market to include ten Linux distributions readers can try
